VESTAL, N.Y. -- It’s over two miles of blacktop that hundreds of people use. And soon, the Rail Trail will have a place for people to grab a snack.

“It’s been sitting here for seven years. Now we’re going to have a company come in and pay rent, pay the utilities for all services,” said Steve Milkovich, Town of Vestal Councilmember.

The town board voted unanimously Monday night to take the Rounds Coal House on the Rail Trail and turn it into a concessions building.

“Our coal house here today is wireless, so we’re going to embrace residents from young to old to come and use their laptops and their Nooks. Have a cup of coffee in the morning or soda in the evening,” said Milkovich

Mark Mushalla, M Squared Management, added, “We’re going to start off slow, with phase one, with light refreshments, cold drinks, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, pastries, snacks, that sort of thing.”

The coal house was built in 1908 and was moved to its current location on the trail in 2006. The board says more than 800 people visit the trail from Memorial Day through the fall. The town will be splitting the profit with the private company they're collaborating with.

“We need to work on this as a team, collaborate and make this a great place for the Town of Vestal and the surrounding communities,” said Mushalla.

The board says this move will enhance the trail and town, as there are plans to sponsor community events, as early as Veterans Day. Concessions should be up and running by the first week of October. Board members say there's also been talk about building a pond near the coal house that can be used as an ice rink in the winter.

"We have an event planned here for Veterans Day. Four mile road race going to start right here, back and forth, honor the veterans and hopefully have a good time. We're going to have a lot of that kind of stuff, lots of events, a community gathering place. Going to build a deck out here, starting that tomorrow,” said Mushalla.

Bringing more to the rail trail with the hope that more people will come together.
