MASSENA, N.Y. -- The Village Board of Massena voted unanimously Tuesday night to re-impose a curfew that hasn't been enforced in almost 20 years. The curfew will affect anyone under the age of 16 and will be in effect from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m.
It was deemed necessary after police had numerous issues with vandalism during the night.
"We also had some recently had some high profile cases in the last year, year and a half where we had damages at our graveyards and activities where people just shouldn't be at night and where minors shouldn't be at all, so those particular cases cause us to really look at this and think time to enact it,” said Timmy J. Currier, Massena Police Chief.
The village's old curfew stopped being enforced due to legal challenges to curfew laws around the country. But, Currier and the village are confident the new wording in the law is acceptable.
