SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Despite constant talk of the fiscal cliff and consumer confidence down, some businesses in downtown Syracuse are optimistic about the new year and they're looking to start it off with a bang.

More than a dozen bars, restaurants and other venues are offering customers something extra for spending New Year's Eve with them. That means special menus and discounts at some bars and restaurants.

Some business owners say traffic was strong throughout the year and they're looking forward to what 2013 will bring.

"We're looking forward to the new hotel opening down here and some of the other developments down here as well. I also welcome the expansion of Destiny USA. I think anything to grow the economy and to grow Central New York is a win-win for everybody," said David Katleski, owner of the Empire Brewing Company in Armory Square.

The Downtown Committee says 20 new businesses opened their doors in 2012. That's up from a dozen the year before.
