Student treated for possibly serious illness
OSWEGO, N.Y. -- A SUNY Oswego student is being treated for a suspected case of bacterial meningitis.
The county Health Department says the 18-year-old freshman was taken to the hospital Monday morning and is being treated in the pediatric intensive care unit at Upstate University Hospital.
Bacterial meningitis is a relatively rare illness, where bacteria infect the covering of the brain and the spinal cord.
The county and state health departments are working with Oswego State staff to make sure that anyone who had close contact with the student receives preventive medication. They say the only people at risk of infection are those who had close contact with her.
Anyone who would like more information is being asked to call the Oswego County Health Department at 349-3547.
