UTICA, N.Y. -- Utica Police say a shooting at the Super 8 Motel on North Genesee Street was accidental.

Officers were called to the scene around 4:30 p.m. Monday. They say Kenneth Loope, 79, of Florida, was shot in the abdomen after his gun discharged when he threw a jacket on top of it while it was on a dresser.

Police determined the gun was legally owned and no charges are expected.

Loope's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
