BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- A community center on Binghamton's north side is getting ready to open its doors once again.

The Lee Barta Center on Liberty Street provides activities for children and their parents after school and during the summer. It closed due to budget constraints and a lack of volunteers, but will reopen under the management of the United Way of Broome County.

At a neighborhood assembly meeting Thursday, a representative from the United Way discussed the plans for the center, which includes tutoring, classes, as well as bring back the Fresh Cycles program that was previously operated at the location.

"We're always trying to find ways to engage our different demographics in the city and young people being a very large demographic, it's really important that we have many different activities that engage them in something that's positive and not just them, but their parents," said Binghamton City Councilor Lea Webb.

The United Way is currently working on some renovations to the building. It's expected to reopen this spring.
