SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A Central New York group is setting out to educate the community on the local effects of congressional budget sequestration

The Central New York AFL-CIO talked about what the cuts mean in daily lives at a news conference.

Organizers say many people whose pay is either federally funded or subsidized are already feeling the effects. They are calling on lawmakers to avoid cutting funding to programs that directly affect the community and instead explore other ways of making cuts.

"Maybe we don't need another ball park. Maybe this year we can't do that. Maybe this year we have to fix our bridges. Maybe this year we have to fix our roads. So we do that this year. There are plenty of ways to look at these budgets, I'm sure," said Ann Marie Taliercio, President of CNY AFL-CIO.

Taliercio says many grants programs used to improve the community are also getting axed under the sequester.
