Spitzer stops in Watertown

By: Amy Ohler

Spitzer stops in Watertown
Democratic candidate for Governor Eliot Spitzer made a stop in Watertown Thursday to take a tour of Public Square and talk with area business owners. Small business owners we spoke with said it shows a lot for Spitzer to make one of his first stops in Northern New York.

"To me that shows that our next Governor-elect will have more interest in the outlined areas away from Albany, away from New York City, where the majority of people live and do business," said Brewster's Bar-B-Que owner Bruce Bohannon.

While some felt more political support is needed in Northern New York, others said the North Country has been politically put back on the map.

"Actually, I think we're getting a lot of attention. Senator Schumer and Clinton have been very attentive, Mr. Spitzer has, Governor Pataki has. I think we get a lot of attention in this area now. That was not always the case 10 or 20 years ago," said Watertown Mayor Jeff Graham.

Either way, people who came out to support Spitzer said they're pleased that he made an effort to stop in Watertown and let them address their concerns. People we spoke with in Watertown said among the changes they'd like to see are better incentives for small businesses and more projects like Watertown's current Streetscape revitalization plan.

"We're going to revitalize it, we're going to get a lot more of the state money dedicated to the cities that need to be rebuilt. The infrastructure project right here in downtown, get some good retail activity, build the housing we need to keep the troops here once they get to the fort. Those are the things that will be the engine for growth. I just can't wait to do it," Eliot Spitzer said.

While speaking to small business owners, Spitzer also said he would fight to keep every business in downtown Watertown.
