A young woman from Kyrgyzstan learns about Public Radio

By: News 10 Now Staff

As a journalist, Nazira Djakylbekova's dream is to take everything she can learn about American public radio and start one in her native country of Kyrgyzstan.

She started her US adventure four months ago in Philadelphia, then traveled to San Francisco. Now, she is in Canton at North Country Public Radio.

Djakylbekova said they don't have public radio stations in Kyrgyzstan. She said she was focusing on programming ideas and how public radio stations are built and run.

However, when she gets back to Kyrgyzstan, starting up her own radio station won't be easy. "The government there will not help fund the station."

Her team will have to build it with money from grants and donations. Some people from North Country Public Radio are also willing to help. They have been pricing airline tickets to see if they can send some people to Kyrgyzstan sometime in the not so distant future to help her rig up some of the technical things she is going to need.
