Man convicted of second-degree murder

(Rochester-AP) -- A 33-year-old man was convicted of second-degree murder for plunging a metal fingernail file into another man's chest -- but he insists he only meant to wound his victim.

State Supreme Court jurors found Tyrone Lawhorn guilty of acting with "a depraved indifference to human life," but acquitted him of intentional murder.

Videotape surveillance showed Lawhorn in the convenience store where he stabbed 19-year-old Kifaru Simone-Taylor to death on Feb. 15.

Lawhorn testified that he was only trying to hurt Simone-Taylor for breaking his finger in an earlier dispute.

But the assistant district attorney said the force of the blow indicated that Lawhorn was trying to kill Simone-Taylor.

Lawhorn faces a prison term ranging from 15 years to life to 25 years to life at his scheduled sentencing Jan. 9.
