Valentine's Day shopping

Valentine's Day shopping
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Valentine's Day is just a few days away and that means love is in the air. So what are couples buying this year?

"We've seen a lot of the traditional things in terms of diamond jewelry, candy and then we're seeing some more intimate things, intimate apparel, little teddies, some real sexy underwear," said Nicki Macallair, a Valentine’s Day gift wrapper.

A lot of shoppers were following suit, coming out of chocolate stores and Victoria's Secret. That's where Patrick Shanley found his girlfriend's gift.

"I took a combination of her two favorite things and obviously knew what she wanted ,so that's what I decided to get her," said Shanley.

When it comes to younger lovebirds, who are under 25, vendors say costume jewelry is a big sell.

"A lot of guys, especially young ones, like to buy belly rings for their girlfriends. We have belly rings here. And we have some fancy necklaces, sometimes they go to Valentine's parties or something," said Gonul Bighat of Silver Moon Jewelry.

But back at the gift wrapping table, Macallair says you may be surprised to know who the last minute shoppers on this holiday are.

"I haven't wrapped any of the girls buying for the guys," said Macallair.

But the owner of Isadora Lingerie on Armory Square says women prepare well in advance.

"Women coming in usually earlier before Valentines Day, picking out things that they know their significant other has either requested or something they want to surprise them with," said Callisto.

But most couples said it's not the gifts that matter, but the time they spend together and most have some pretty romantic plans.

"Probably cuddle in the blankets, watching movies. Yeah probably watch movies all day and maybe dinner," said couple Rociel Landon and Dustin Trotz.

Callisto says Valentine's Day is the second biggest holiday in terms of sales at her store.
