ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The clams that caused more than 200 people to become sick after eating at a North Syracuse restaurant were tainted with bacteria. Tests by the State Health Department identified several types of bacteria in the clams from Hinerwadel's.

At least 236 illnesses were reported from people who ate raw mahogany clams from the restaurant. Onondaga County Health Commissioner Dr. Cynthia Morrow says the bacteria matches the bacteria found in the people who became sick earlier this month.

“So this is consistent with what we saw in the human cases and I think that what this really points out to that it is highly, highly unlikely that Hinerwadel's had anything to do with this, other than they received the clams," said Dr. Morrow.

Hinerwadel's gets its clams from a distributor in Maine. Dr. Morrow says the county is working with the state to determine exactly where the tainted clams came from.
