BREWERTON, N.Y. -- Ovarian cancer isn't something to celebrate, but finding its cure certainly is. People Partied for a Cure Saturday at the Castaway's Riverside restaurant in Brewerton.

The afternoon of fun, food and music was held by Hope for Heather, an organization that raises awareness and funds in the fight against ovarian cancer.

The organization is named after Heather Weeks, a Liverpool woman who passed away from the disease in 2008.

Her mother, who says the event pulled in twice as many supporters as expected, says Heather would be blown away from the turnout.

“She was very dedicated to creating a mission and making women aware of what the disease could do. So it makes me feel very heart-warmed to see the reception that we have gotten,” said Freida Weeks, Heather’s mom.

The fundraiser also included an auction and a small health fair. After seeing the success this year's event, organizers hope to turn the Party for a Cure into an annual fundraiser.
