ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A local group of cheerleaders is back from a national competition with plenty to brag about. The West Genesee Varsity Cheerleading Squad took home first place in their division at the National Spirit Competition in Columbus, Ohio over the weekend. They competed against 30 other squads.
After a tough season filled with obstacles, their coach says she is proud of what the squad was able to overcome and accomplish.
"It's amazing; it's been a great journey with these girls. This is one of the most talented and most dedicated teams I've worked with. I've been in West Genny since 2005 I've been coaching here. And this group of girls is so talented and so hard working, and they really wanted it, and they went out there and they did their best, and their best was amazing,” said Nina Baker, head coach.
The cheerleaders took home a trophy, medals, championship jackets and a national championship banner for their victory.
