SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- New York State needs to take steps to make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists. That's the finding of a new report by AARP, which looked at fatalities and injuries in the five most populous upstate counties, Albany, Broome, Erie, Monroe and Onondaga.

Representatives held a press conference at the intersection of South Geddes and Seymour streets in Syracuse which the report determined to be the most dangerous out of all five counties.

Older New Yorkers are particularly at risk. People over 60 represent nearly 25 percent of bicyclist and pedestrian deaths, while only accounting for about 19 percent of the population.

AARP says safety could be improved through some simple measures, such as changing the timing on traffic lights.

"Now for instance I'm 90 years old, and it's difficult for me to walk fast sometimes. In fact, when I cross the street sometimes down Salina Street I hold my breath that I get there in time," said Arlene Bolton with AARP .

AARP is calling on state lawmakers to pass the "Complete Streets" legislation, which would require bicycle and pedestrian accommodations to be included in transportation programs.
