KNOXBORO, N.Y. -- The Oneida County Sheriff's Office has released new details regarding the overnight shooting that claimed the life of a deputy.
Deputy Kurt Wyman, 24, and another deputy were called to a domestic dispute in the hamlet of Knoxboro at about 8 p.m. Monday. Knoxboro is about 40 miles east of Syracuse.
When they arrived, the suspect, Christian Patterson, 41, barricaded himself in his garage with a shotgun.
After a six-hour standoff, as deputies attempted to take him into custody, investigators said Patterson shot Deputy Wyman and also shot at an investigator. Deputies returned fire, hitting Patterson several times.
Wyman and Patterson were taken to a hospital in Utica where Wyman died. Patterson's condition is unknown at this time.
Wyman joined the force in 2007. He is survived by his wife and their 18-month-old son. His wife is expecting their second child.
