AUBURN, N.Y. -- Auburn Memorial Hospital celebrated the grand opening of its newly renovated maternity wing. The hospital offered its first tours of the facility Thursday.
It took a year to renovate the wing. Te hospital improved equipment and added private rooms, allowing babies to stay with their mothers.
Auburn Memorial received a grant to help pay for the project, but it was the outpouring of community support that helped them reach their $2.4 million fundraising goal. And those who work at the facility say the tremendous support sends a very positive message.
"What I think it says to the women in this community is, you're important, your families are important to us. We want you to be able to be comfortable and well-cared for in your own home, in your community. You don't need to drive to another city to have a baby, you can do that right here and be very, very well taken care of," said Marge Tracy, a certified nurse and midwife.
The last time the maternity ward underwent a major renovation was in 1958.
