ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Oneida County's 911 Center gave the public a rare peek inside their operations Saturday during the second annual open house for National Telecommunications week.

The tour gives people an idea of all the responsibilities dispatchers face, and just how busy they can get. Each dispatcher can be working on up to six computer monitors while answering phones.

Dispatchers are also trained to give first aid and safety advice to callers before police or emergency crews get to the scene.

Kevin Revere, Oneida County 911 Center Director said, “When people need help, we're the first ones to answer and to dispatch emergency responders, so we like the community to know that we are here, we are responsive to their needs, and we're certainly always here to help."

Officials said they will keep the open house next year because this year's turnout was so much better than last year's.
