Importance of physical fitness for senior citizens
If you're over 50 years old, are you getting enough exercise? Studies show that people who engage in moderate or high levels of exercise live longer and are less likely to suffer from heart disease. Our Brad Vivacqua reports from Cicero Twin Rinks.

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- It may be quiet on the ice right now, but that's not the case on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Twice a week, about 30 seniors with the Golden Skate group get together in Cicero for about an hour and a half of open skating.
This month is both Physical Fitness and Older Americans Month, and seniors are encouraged to be more active to benefit their health. Some of the group members say ice skating helps their balance and their endurance. Studies show that moderate to high level exercise can help reduce the risk of heart disease and allows seniors to live healthier.
A few people in their eighties at the rink highly recommend getting any kind of exercise if you can.
"I've had back surgery and hip replacement, so my balance isn’t what it used to be. But, I have great fun just skating around since I was three,” said Jean Palmiter, Golden Skate Club member.
"Anything you're moving your body it's good for you, I bike, I used to run until I injured my knee last year, and I skate, it's wonderful, I love it. It works everything, it works the whole body. And, sometimes the brain," said Dave Reardon, Golden Skate Club member.
Dave Reardon says he drives about an hour and a half from Little Falls each week to ice skate in Cicero. Dave is 84 years old and Jean is 82 years old.
At the Cicero Twin Rinks, seniors also participate in activities including Zumba Gold, Pickleball, yoga, and even hockey.
If you're 50 or older and you'd like to join the Golden Skate ice skating program, the group meets at 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
