NEW YORK -- New York State Troopers are cracking down on drivers on the Thruway with the start of construction season. Operation Spring Brake and Antler Alert are back in full force, reminding people to drive slower through construction zones and be alert for deer and other animals along the highway.

Troopers said many drivers aren't as alert when traveling on long highways, and they don't notice when they begin driving faster. With crews working on the shoulder of the road, drivers need to be aware of posted speed signs and follow the Move Over Law.

This initiative works to prevent drivers from going unreasonable speeds. On Wednesday, a driver was arrested for traveling 170 miles per hour on his motorcycle on the Thruway.

"If you're just going down the highway and maybe want to pass the vehicle in front of you, you look, there's nobody there, you go to pull out in the left lane and here's this guy. Because you're not expecting somebody to be going 160. I'm amazed that nobody got hurt yesterday. It was crazy," said New York State Trooper Robin Urbaniak.

New York State Troopers issued more than 2,000 tickets for violating speed limits during last year's five day Operation Safe Brake.

This year's initiative runs from May 7th through the 11th.
