MATTYDALE, N.Y. -- It was a brief, but scary situation at a Mattydale church Saturday morning.

The bomb squad responded to check out a suspicious backpack left at a garage sale benefiting the school at Saint Margaret's Church on Route 11. The sheriff's office said a man left his backpack in a bathroom while he went for a run.

But volunteers at the garage sale said the man ran off without saying anything, making them suspicious.

Kathy Lawler, a Garage Sale volunteer said, “We were concerned for the safety of everyone in the building so we evacuated everyone, all the volunteers, all the kids, all the shoppers and then I called 911."

Deputies said there was nothing dangerous in the backpack, and the man is not being charged. The garage sale will be held again Sunday.
