Schenectady PD to destroy drug evidence
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Schenectady Police Department will destroy 200 pounds of old drug evidence.
Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett asked the city council Monday night for permission to burn all drugs collected between 1981 and 1997.
It's expected to cost about $3,000, but Bennett argued, and the council agreed, that the outdated evidence is now a liability.

Bennett tells us they are looking to have the evidence destroyed by a firm in Washington County.
The move comes after former police officer Jeffrey Curtis was caught stealing cocaine from a drug locker and selling it to dealers earlier this year.
Each piece of evidence dating back to 2000 has been barcoded since Bennett took office in May.
As for the drugs collected in 1998 and 1999, the county DA still has to make sure it can be destroyed.
