Split verdict in Turner trial
ELMIRA, N.Y.--A jury finds an Elmira man not guilty of attempted murder but guilty of attempted assault and weapons charges.
The jury returned the verdict against Jesse Turner, 18, Friday after more than 12 hours of deliberations that spanned two days.
They decided Turner meant to hurt, but not kill, Justin Woodard, 27, when he shot Woodard in the face during a drive-by on Oak Street last March.
Several people involved in the incident have significant criminal backgrounds, most notably Woodard. Lawyers say that complicated the case, as did the fact that only one witness, who was in the car with Turner, positively tied him to a gun.

"He is the only one who actually put the weapon in Jesse's hands and as we all know, despite a very thorough search, police were unable to locate a weapon," said Chemung County Public Defender Nancy Eraca-Cornish.
"It was a difficult case because the weapon was never recovered. But the jury was able to put the pieces together to get over that hurdle and obviously conclude Mr. Turner was the shooter in the case," said Assistant Chemung County District Attorney John Thweatt.
Turner faces up to 15 years in prison when he's sentenced next month.
