YCCA band ready for big concert
ROME, N.Y. -- These twenty-three teenagers will get the chance to play in front of thousands in a concert held in memory of those lost during the September eleventh attacks.

"It's a real honor," said drummer Tommy Fleming.

They are students of the YMCA Center for the Creative Arts in Rome. On Monday, they held their final rehearsal before heading down to perform alongside the Harlem Girls & Boys Choir on the steps of the New York City Library.

"Going down there puts you close to ground zero and gives the kids a chance to really get a feeling for it and I'm sure it's going to come out in the music," said conductor John Piazza Jr.

"They get to play music. They're actually providing uplifting music for not only the people who suffered loses there, but general people, you know, the general community. And they're representing this part of New York, which is a fabulous thing," said orchestrator Joel Martin.

Students come from different schools throughout the region and vary in ages, but they all have a passion for music. And for some, preparing for this concert was no more work than they are already used to.

"Just practicing the music like a normal band. The music is just about as challenging as our regular band music, so it wasn't that much more work," said flutist Brittney Nowack.

A great opportunity and the students are looking forward to honoring those lost and inspire through music.

Along with performing, the group will also visit the Lincoln Center and tour the Louis Armstrong House and Archives in Queens.
