ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- After just two days of testimony, the prosecution has rested in the David Trebilcock murder trial.

Trebilcock is on trial for the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend's six-year-old daughter in Sherrill last year.

Testimony Wednesday focused on Trebilcock's mental state immediately after the alleged murder. A state police investigator, who took two statements from Trebilcock following the incident, took the stand Wednesday.

In the statements, Trebilcock detailed how he did not sleep the night before and read Lauren Belius “The Lord's Prayer” before he killed her. It also says that he wanted to kill Lauren because he thought she was the anti-Christ and could see his past, present and future.

On the same day of Trebilcock's first statement, investigators found a note with cryptic apocalyptic messages in the garage of the home.

The investigator read part of Trebilcock's statement, in which Trebilcock said he knew he should be punished, but was not remorseful for his actions.

"I do not feel sorry for killing Lauren," Trebilcock told the investigator. "I do not want to get out of jail. For taking Lauren from Erica and Allison, I should get 20 years in prison. For killing Lauren, I should get life in prison.”

The defense started calling witnesses Wednesday, claiming that Trebilcock should not be sent to prison for his crimes because of mental illness.

A psychiatrist who evaluated Trebilcock testified that he displayed characteristics of schizophrenia, paranoia and anxiety.

Testimony will continue Thursday. The judge expects to have a verdict by early next week.
