ROME, N.Y. -- It was once the only airport in the country to receive Military Airport Program funding, known as MAP. Now Senator Charles Schumer said millions in those federal funds may once again be on the way to Griffiss Airport in Rome.
The senator said he pushed to add two more MAP slots to the latest FAA reauthorization bill and is lobbying for Griffiss to be one of the recipients. MAP funds are meant to help former military airports convert to civilian use.
"What our airport officials want to do is redevelop key airport facilities that are critical to the success of this great airport. For example, the airport has already designed plans for a new terminal," said Sen. Schumer.
Schumer said the goal is to secure $20 million to complete the terminal and renovate two former military hangars to turn the airport into a maintenance hub for the Northeast.
