SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Students from the Southern Tier, the North Country and Western New York meet up in Syracuse to show off their science, technology, engineering, and math skills.

The Doctor Nelson Ying Tri-Region Science and Engineering Fair was held at Onondaga Community College Sunday. Kids in grades 5 through 12 from 24 counties showed off their projects and discuss them with judges.

Organizers said the range of projects demonstrates that children are eager to learn.

Mary Eileen Wood, Ying TRSEF Director said, “All of these kids didn't want to sit in front of the tube, didn't want to sit and play games on the computer. They wanted to take this mind they had been given and use it, and grow it, and stretch it and challenge it.

Three winners from Sunday's event will head to the International Science Fair in Pittsburgh in May.
