UTICA, N.Y. -- Young people in the Utica area are receiving some extra help when it comes to breaking into the job market.

A new program is available for 16- to 24-year-olds through the Workforce Investment Board of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties. It's aimed at helping young adults from at-risk families find jobs that have the potential to turn into long-term employment.

The program was made possible by $100,000 in New York Youth Works grants.

Participants will be trained in job readiness and other skills needed for their respective placements.

"I think it's beyond the scope of just having a job, and I think that's what's imperative at this point. It's the mentoring of the skills to move to the next level," said Utica Mayor Rob Palmieri.

A screening day will be held for those interested on May 17 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the IT Building on MVCC's Utica campus.

Eligibility requirements

You must be 16-24 years old, unemployed, and one of the following:

Member of a family receiving assistance from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
Member of a family that is receiving SNAP benefits (food stamps).
Member of a family that is receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
Receives free or reduced cost school lunch.
Referred by a rehabilitation agency approved by the State or an employment network under the Ticket to Work Program.
Served time in jail or prison or is on probation or parole.
Pregnant or a parent.
Homeless.
Currently in or will soon be leaving foster care.
18 years old, no longer in school, and don't have a high school diploma or GED.
Veteran
Daughter or son of a parent who is currently in jail or prison or has been within the past two years.
Daughter or son of a parent who is collecting unemployment insurance.
