ELMIRA, N.Y. -- It's a healthier and friendlier environment that's helping cat adoptions.
The Chemung County SPCA and Humane Society hosted an open house Friday to showcase their recently renovated adoption rooms. With the help of a grant from the Sweetbay Foundation, the cat area has seen major improvements.
Since its opening, the shelter has seen a dramatic decrease in the number of days cats stay with the organization.
"Adopters feel more comfortable coming in and interacting with the animals and they really can choose which animal they want in a relaxed environment and not be overwhelmed with so many animals," said Jaclyn Pfaehler Welles, a spokesperson for the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA.
The dog adoption area has a new look as well. A donation paid for a paint job to spruce it up and make it more inviting.
