Man Charged with DWI in Benton Crash at Psychiatric Center
The Yates County Sheriff's Department said the man charged with criminally negligent homicide in connection with Tuesday's crash that killed five people is now in the custody of the Rochester Psychiatric Center.
Steven Eldridge, 42, is charged with five counts of criminally negligent homicide, DWI, and reckless driving in connection with the Benton crash.
The sheriff's department said Eldridge caused the crash passing a tractor on Pre-Emption Rd. and hitting an oncoming van. That sent the van into the tractor killing five members of the Amish community from Steuben County.
Sheriff Spike said Eldridge is in temporary custody for evaluation and treatment at the psychiatric center. The sheriff did not say what Eldridge is being treated for. The case will eventually go to a Yates County grand jury.
