STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. -- Jury selection got underway Monday in Steuben County Court where an Elmira man is on trial for murder.

Marland Brooks is accused of killing Clark Van Etten last June at Van Etten's Corning apartment. His lawyer claims Brooks acted in self-defense and plans to use that as his defense.

A second person was also allegedly involved in the crime. Samantha Smith has not yet been indicted, but attorneys say it is unlikely she will be charged with murder as well. Her next court date is February 6th.

As for Brooks' trial, five jurors were seated on Monday and jury selection will continue Tuesday.
