ELMIRA, N.Y. -- For the past six months, the Village of Painted Post has considered selling and transporting water to Pennsylvania drilling companies to be used for hydraulic fracturing.

This week, Hunt Engineering shared design plans for the project, which could bring in up to $2 million per year for the village.

Elmira is also looking at a similar project. City officials say the parking lot across from the Kennedy Valve building is ready to be used as a water station.

But the city does not have plans to sell water to Pennsylvania. It would only be used if hydrofracking gets approved in New York State.

"It will be the water board's decision whether or not they choose to sell water for that purpose, for fracking or whatever. They haven't made that decision yet, but it's in place should they decide to go forward, should New York State decide to go forward," said Elmira city manager John Burin.

Burin says if the plan moves forward, both the water board and the city would profit from it.
