Grape Street Fire: Ten Days Later

As many students returned from February break, counselors were on hand to help the students deal with the loss of four friends.

Funeral services have yet to be finalized for 14-year-old Gage Reavey, who attended East High, and his siblings.

Thirteen-year-old Gregory Kugler was also killed in the fire, as were twelve-year-old Kandee Kugler and six-year-old Kayden Kugler, who both attended School #5.

The children died in during the overnight hours of February 18th in a house fire on Grape Street.

Fire crews were originally called to the home that Saturday morning for a report of a rubbish fire outside the duplex home. When firefighters checked the home, they noticed flames and smoke coming from the first floor, but the blaze was too intense for crews to enter the home.

They were able to rescue the children's mother, 30-year-old Bobbie Kugler, and her two-year-old son Tyron Jackson. Thirteen-year-old Giovanni Delorm was also injured in that blaze and remains in satisfactory condition at Strong Hospital. Late last week, 25-year-old James Austin, was released from the hospital after being treated for injuries he suffered in the fire.

A local funeral director is providing a remembrance service for the community this Saturday at Angel Hills Funeral Chapel in Rochester. Thomas Gainey knows firsthand the pain, having lost a childhood friend years ago. Gainey says people in that community need some closure and he's hoping the service will help them deal with the loss.

Funeral Plans Finalized

According to the family, funeral services for all four fire victims will be held at Olthof Funeral Home at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 1st. Balloons will be released for the celebration of Kandee's birthday.
