CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. -- Mayors in Chemung County say they refuse to let seniors go hungry and they showed their conviction Wednesday by delivering food for the county's Meals on Wheels program.

Nine mayors and other local officials joined volunteers to deliver meals to hundreds of residents. It's part of the nationwide Mayors for Meals Day promoting the importance of the Meals on Wheels program.

"It brings awareness to the government officials that this service is there and how important it is and to see the smiles on these faces. We don't get out of our offices enough but we need to go to the people and see how beneficial this program is," said Don Zeigler, (R) Horseheads village mayor.

Last year Meals on Wheels of Chemung County delivered 90,000 meals to more than 2,000 people.
