SOUTHPORT, N.Y. -- By just more than 100 votes, Southport residents decided they do not want a new community center in Chapel Park.

The Town of Southport had plans drawn up for a new $3.5 million facility that would replace the current building. Town officials assured residents taxes would not go up for the project and that there is room in the budget to maintain the facility.

But Monday, voters rejected the proposal.

The current facility has one 1,300 square foot room. The new community center would have been a 27,000 square foot building.
