BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Congressman Richard Hanna visited Binghamton University for TRIO Day. The federal program works to make higher education more accessible for low-income, first generation and disabled high schoolers. It also continues to provide assistance at BU through its Student Support Services.

During the lunch, Hanna encouraged students to take advantage of all the educational opportunities they possibly can, but also told them their main focus should be career preparation rather than a general education.

"They may not have the privilege of going to a liberal arts college, it may be more necessary for them to decide a path, get an education, get into STEM and figure out their return on investment for their education because we see the default rate of student loans today are out of control," Hanna said.

Hanna also spoke about the importance of the STEM fields and told students he's working on a new bill that will give tax dedications to those who study STEM subjects.
