BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- A somber Sunday for many in the Southern Tier as police officers who died in the line of duty are remembered.

People gathered at the All Saints Church off of Harry L. Drive in Johnson City for a memorial service. A New York State Police Honor Guard and bag piper welcomed police officers from many departments into the church. People lit candles in remembrance of friends and family members who gave their lives.

The memorial service is just one of many events going on this week to honor slain officers and their families.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Memorial Association. Organizers say it's important to remember those who sacrificed their lives while protecting and serving the local area.

"For those that we've lost this is a remembrance for them in honor of their family members, so it brings a little bit of sorrow still. But also it doesn't get them lost at their death," said Paul Burnett, Southern Tier Law Enforcement Memorial Association President.

There will be a public memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday at Binghamton University's Cooper Administration.
