SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. -- In a time where schools are struggling to keep their programs intact, Watkins Glen High School could receive $50,000 to go toward the school's art program.
Nine Watkins Glen High School students are participating in the nationwide Vans Custom Culture contest. They designed four pairs of Vans sneakers in different categories: art, music, extreme sports, and local flavor. The winner from each region goes to the finals in California.
Watkins Glen is currently in second place in the Northeast region. The grand prize is $50,000. Runners-up will receive $4,000.
Students said winning the grand prize would go a long way in such a small school.
"To me...I still have two more years left of high school so if we got $50,000...that would help a lot for more art supplies because I'm going to be in art again," said Courtney Tuttle, Watkins Glen sophomore.
You can vote for Watkins Glen online until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. To vote, head to www.vans.com/customculture/.
