TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- It has been ten years in the making and on Monday, officials broke ground on the third phase of the Cayuga Waterfront Trail.
The completed project will be a six-mile paved walkway connecting several attractions on the south end of Cayuga Lake. It was designed to help revitalize the waterfront and connect the community with the lake.
Developers completed phase one, but then skipped over phase two of the project after property owners objected to having the trail built on their land.
"At least in this case, property acquisition was not an issue," said Ithaca mayor Carolyn Peterson. "This is all on city land and in the street right of way. And it will be a beautiful connection through our really gorgeous Stewart Park, which is really a regional park and a regional asset, around our golf course area over to our very, very, very popular farmer's market."
Phase three is expected to be completed in November.
