TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Girl Scouts from Tompkins County got a firsthand look at the importance of science, technology, engineering and math. On Thursday, more than 50 girls took part in the "Who Says Science is Just for Boys?" program at Ithaca's Sciencenter.
Girl Scouts participated in hands-on learning activities and heard from local businesswomen in the STEM field. Organizers said programs like this one are necessary to inspire kids to pursue STEM careers.
"We'd really like to introduce girls to the STEM fields to show them it's something that is accessible to them since most women do not go into those fields, and it's definitely something that's going to be expanding in the future, so our hope is that we're going to get them excited about science, technology, engineering and math," said Kimberly Taylor, manager of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
