ITHACA, N.Y. -- Officials are crediting a passerby for possibly preventing a fire in Ithaca from spreading.

Police say a driver passing by a residence on University Avenue noticed a small porch fire in progress just after 7 a.m. Sunday. The motorist then quickly notified the residents and police of the fire.

An Ithaca police officer was able to slow the fire down with an extinguisher before firefighters arrived.

Luckily, no one was injured.

Investigators are now looking into the cause of the fire.
