JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- How much longer must a woman work to make the same money as her male counterpart? It was a question answered Tuesday on the day dubbed "Equal Pay Day."

The Jefferson County branch of the American Association of University Women spoke to people at Jefferson Community College and collected signatures for the "Fair Pay Bill.”

Equal Pay Day is the day when women's average wages catch up to men's from the previous year. Here's how the math breaks down. If a male works five days a week for 12 months, the American Association of University Women says a woman must work seven days a week for 16 months to earn equivalent wages.

"The assembly has passed the equal pay bill several times but the senate has never done this and these petitions will, the AAUW will be taking them to the senate as encouragement for them to indeed sign, finally pass the bill," said Peggy Coe, AAUW Member.

The AAUW has been around for over 125 years.
