Potsdam Humane Society seriously overcrowded
POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The Potsdam Humane Society is seriously overcrowded. The shelter keeps getting more dogs and cats, but is having a hard time finding them homes.
"There's very little traffic through the shelter, so we're seeing it with both, but the dogs are the real crisis right now. We're trying to move the dogs out of here so that they can have a happy life," said Bonnie Boyd, a Humane Society Board Member.
The shelter is so full that pretty soon desperate measures are going to have to be taken to control the dog population.
"We have not been euthanizing. But the situation we're in right now, we're going to be forced to do that within the next week, because there just isn't room for these animals," said Boyd.
"We really don't want to do that. We haven't euthanized a healthy, adoptable animal in over 14 months," said Anne Smith, the Behavioral and Training Program Coordinator.
That's why the shelter is reaching out to the community, and asking for help.

"If you're thinking of adopting a dog, now is the time to do it. We just don't have enough room," said Boyd.
If having a pet isn't in your long-term plans, the Potsdam Humane Society is looking for foster families for dogs or cats for short periods of time.
"Not everyone would be fostering all the time and that give people a break in between sessions of fostering. Your foster period could go anywhere from a week to a couple of months,” said Smith.
The shelter has six foster families right now and would like to have at least 24. Some for cats and some for dogs.
"I would say a lot of the foster parents find that it's very rewarding," said Smith.
The shelter has both large and small dogs, as well as cats and kittens desperate for homes.
