Local radio show a national hit with snowmobilers
LEWIS COUNTY, N.Y. -- It may not look like a lot, but tell that to the 400,000 people who tune in or download it across the country. Lewis County's Lee Hinkleman talks to those people each and every week using just that microphone and a recorder.

He's the host of the nation's largest radio show about snowmobiles, called 'IROC and Beyond' and he does it right from his home.

"It is absolutely a blast when you're doing something that's from the heart, something that's your passion,” he said. "My wife will tell you I don't make any money at it. It's just for fun. It's a lot of fun."

The show hits all topics snowmobile from all over the country, from events and races to education and issues. He says arguably the nation's best trails happen to be right in Lewis County.

His listeners agree and are thrilled the season is upon us.

"I have been waiting all year and it's just really fun to snowmobile. I finally have my license to snowmobile,” Lowville Rider Darren Ortlieb.

Hinkleman says the reason communities, just like Lewis County, are becoming more snowmobile friendly is because of what it offers everyone.

"Quite frankly a lot of people don't realize this is our economy. It's a hidden economy,” the host said. "You don't see the sleds out there. They're off behind the trees and out there in the woods. You don't see the money coming in."

Hinkleman is also a war vet. So Sunday he's combining his two loves. He's helping set up a morning breakfast for snowmobile riders and anyone else at the Lowville VFW.

Proceeds will help support the organization in 2009. Sunday's breakfast will be from nine until noon at the Lowville VFW and is all you can eat for seven dollars.
