Walkers raise awareness about skin cancer
WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Raising awareness about Melanoma and remembering those who died from it; that's what Sunday's Melanoma Awareness Walk in Watertown was all about.

More than 100 people came out to support the cause. The walk is in memory of two Northern New Yorkers, Greg Maur and Tricia Alteri Jetters, who died from the skin cancer, and family and friends say the community's support means a lot.

"My childhood friend, Greg Maur, died from Melanoma two and a half years ago. We basically grew up together. We're out in the sun all the time together. We didn't really think much about it," said Fred Donato, the walk's organizer.

"People think skin cancer is just a little bump on your skin, and she was dying from it. She wanted to make sure that people realized just how dangerous it was to be tanning and to be misusing the sun," said Peggy Alteri, melanoma victim's mother.

Those affected by Melanoma want people to know that skin cancer is that it's easily preventable by wearing sun screen, avoiding tanning parlors and staying in the shade during the sun's peak hours.
