WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- The county clerks responsible for a statewide petition against the new license plate mandate showed up in Watertown with thousands of backers in hand.

Patty Ritchie from St. Lawrence County and George Williams of Oswego County arrived at the offices of Senator Darrel Aubertine and Assemblywoman Addie Russell in Watertown with the names of more than 100,000 New Yorkers who oppose the license plate plan. The clerks say Aubertine and Russell were the only lawmakers north of the Thruway to vote in favor of it.

Ritchie and Williams were among those protesting in Albany Monday...but say their job is still not done.

"We heard from lawmakers that they intend to repeal it. We intend to hold their feet to the fire, but we also know it's not over 'til it's over. So, we're delivering these petitions today to make sure the assemblywoman and senator know that we're serious," said Ritchie.

"They just increase, increase, increase and that's all we see this year. And the people just can't take anymore. They're unemployed, $50 is like a thousand to them," Williams said.

If it does happen, the new plate plan would require the replacement of every set of plates on the road beginning April 1st at a cost of $25 per set.

There are currently 12-million sets of plates currently on the road.
