Oxley trial begins to focus on a key witness

Testimony in the Wayne Oxley murder trial centers around the man Oxley says actually committed the crime. Six people in all took the stand Tuesday, talking about everything from what they saw the night of the murder to the connection between the victim and the man Oxley says actually killed him. Cara Thomas was in the courtroom.

ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Two police officers took the stand on Tuesday during the Wayne Oxley trial and in both testimonies, John Shannon was an integral part of their stories.

Shannon is a key witness to the trial, but was killed in a house fire after testifying during Oxley's first trial.

Steven Fisher was a detective for the Ogdensburg Police Department at the time of Trickey's murder. During his testimony, he confirmed that information from John Shannon directed the investigation toward Oxley. The specifics of that information was not shared. He also testified that Shannon was a confidential police informant for the OPD and would participate in narcotics buys for police investigations, some regarding the deceased Bernard Trickey Jr.

Four other people took the stand Tuesday, telling the jury what they saw or heard the night of the murder. Kathleen Murray, who lives on New York Avenue in Ogdensburg, said she heard people out on the street, loud "popping" noises and saw a man who she thought was Wayne Oxley walk down the street to Trickey's home. She will be back on the stand Wednesday.

Now the witness list is getting shorter, but not only because people are testifying. The defense requested that Wayne Oxley's son be taken off the witness list because he wasn't comfortable getting on the stand.
