WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli says he will take away state pensions from 12 people in Jefferson County after he says they were illegally enrolled in the state's retirement system.

It was last June when DiNapoli first announced that the 12 employees were registered with the state and local retirement system as employees of the Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency, but he says they are actually employees for local development corporations, which are not eligible for pensions.

With this ruling, some employees will lose more than a decade's worth of service credit.

Don Alexander, the CEO of the county IDA, contends the comptroller's office was unjustified in taking away the pensions, saying he believes the office is using inaccurate information in its ruling.

The employees do have the right to appeal.
