WATERTOWN, N.Y. - -Firefighters from across Northern and Central New York took part in a seminar at Jefferson Community College this weekend in honor of a fallen friend.

The first Garrett Loomis Fire Safety seminar focused on teaching firefighters how to tell the difference between conventional silos and oxygen limiting silos. Garret Loomis responded to a silo fire in April of 2010 and died after an explosion caused him to fall more than 30 feet to the ground.

More than 135 emergency responders from Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence Oswego Onondaga and Oneida counties took part. Those in attendance are also working to introduce legislation that would require all oxygen-limiting silos to have a special placard attached to it, warning of the dangers of explosion.

City of Watertown Fire Department Captain T.G. Kolb said, "It's going to be a timely process by the time we get it and introduce it so we're handing out placards so that the area departments that have oxygen limiting silos can voluntarily mark those silos with the placards. Hopefully we can get the message out that way because it's going to take a year or two years maybe to enact the legislation."

The seminar was provided to firefighters through the Northern New York Community Foundation and the Garrett Loomis Fund.
