WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- It's a pretty scary statistic. Studies have shown that one in five children do not know where their next meal will come from.

While reduced and free lunches are a part of the school meal program, snacks during scheduled snack times are not. But a new project kicked off at the Watertown Price Chopper Friday to change that.

The School Snack Cupboard Project will benefit several Jefferson County elementary schools. People donating healthy snacks that will be given to teachers to provide to students who don't have snacks during the day.

"The response has been fantastic. We've been shopping all day with the money from our sponsors and we've been having folks drop things off at the drive here at Price Chopper. We've got cars full of snacks going out to the local schools Monday," said Diane Leonard, Jefferson Leadership Institute class member.
